If you are looking for another great “backyard hike,” the Emerald Mountain Quarry hike is where you want to go! While not literally in your backyard like hiking Mount Werner, Emerald is located right in downtown Steamboat. There are a plethora of trails to choose from, but they are open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders alike so please stay alert. Once you arrive at the Quarry, you will see the entire Yampa Valley and you will have a head-on view of the ski mountain. This is a great easy hike where you can still enjoy that fall foliage!
Head West on Highway 40 into downtown Steamboat. Take a left at 5th Street and a right onto Howelsen Parkway. Drive straight back past the ball fields to park the car.
The hike itself is about 1.3 miles to the Quarry itself. I recommend hiking on the road itself, that way you avoid startling a biker or horseback rider coming down the way. It’s a gentle climb, although some sections are trickier than others. But once you arrive at the top, the views in all directions are spectacular!
After the hike, head back to a nice luxury rental and unwind in the hot tub. Nothing rejuvenates more than a quick hot tub session followed by some stretching!
